Google's Gemini AI model powers the feature, offering "early access" to select US users, with plans to expand to a broader audience in the future.
With Ask Photos, users can ask questions like “show me the best photo from each National Park I visited,” and the AI will use factors such as lighting, clarity, and geolocation to present the most relevant results. This goes beyond the previous ability to search for people, places, or objects in images, allowing for more intricate searches that consider the broader context of photos, including events or activities captured in them. For example, you could ask about specific birthday party themes from past years or even inquire about dishes ordered at a particular restaurant.
Google is emphasizing the privacy of users' data, stating that personal photos won’t be used for ad targeting. However, employees may review user queries to improve the feature’s performance, but only in specific instances where users provide feedback or seek support.
