Bill Gates Praises India’s Digital Public Infrastructure Progress

The co-founder of Microsoft, but a more popular philanthropist, has praised India’s progress towards technology, especially its digital public infrastructure (DPI). While ‘India is on the map’ is echoing amongst tech enthusiasts from across the world, DPI systems like national ID system and Unified Payment System (UPI) have not just led the way, but also revolutionized and banked on the tech usage for the world to see.

DPI and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Leading the Way

In his recent visit to India, Bill Gates saw how technologies like DPI and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are improving access to healthcare, education and other sectors in the country. Additionally, it is also helping small farmers. Bill Gates noticed that such technologies can in fact, transform the world. 

Reports estimate that India's DPI could help grow its economy to $8 trillion by 2030, a big step towards the goal of a $1 trillion digital economy.

Use of Technology to Address Climate Change & Sustainable Development

While meeting the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Gates also discussed AI’s evolution and the impressive DPI progress. Their focus on discussion was the use of technology to address to major global challenges like sustainable development and climate change. 

An expert said India providing digital systems like ID, payments etc as public good on a large scale creates opportunities to offer advanced AI capabilities as a public good, potentially creating a billion entrepreneurs and creators.
