OpenAI introduces o1 AI models designed for complex tasks in coding, science, and mathematics

OpenAI just rolled out its highly anticipated "Strawberry" model series, officially called OpenAI o1, designed to raise the bar for AI problem-solving. The series includes two standout versions: o1-preview and o1-mini, both built to handle complex tasks in areas like science, coding, and mathematics. These models are engineered to spend more time thinking before responding, enhancing their ability to tackle tricky problems effectively.

For example, o1-preview performed remarkably in benchmarks, solving 83% of problems in the International Mathematics Olympiad (compared to just 13% by its predecessor, GPT-4o). The model excels in deep reasoning tasks, making it ideal for fields like healthcare research, where it can annotate complex cell sequencing data, or in physics, where it generates advanced mathematical formulas.

Meanwhile, o1-mini offers a budget-friendly alternative, 80% cheaper than o1-preview, and is fine-tuned for coding tasks. While it's smaller, it maintains high performance in software development, offering fast response times for developers without needing extensive world knowledge.

What sets the o1 series apart is its improved safety mechanisms. OpenAI’s focus on advanced reasoning also enhances safety, with o1-preview scoring significantly higher on tests that prevent rule bypassing or "jailbreaking," ensuring adherence to guidelines. The model's ability to think through safety rules before responding is a leap forward in making AI both smarter and more secure.

As of now, ChatGPT Plus and Team users can access these models, and ChatGPT Enterprise users will get access soon, making it a strong offering for businesses and developers looking for cutting-edge AI capabilities.
